Akiko Hirai is showing her Moon jars as one of the U.K. potters who was inspired by legendary Korean Moon jar.
Marking 130 years of Anglo-Korean relations the exhibition celebrates these
ties through the work of four leading UK potters and a Korean artist.
The Korean Moon Jar or dal-hang-a-ri has an iconic, almost mythological
status. The artists have each been invited to present their work alongside
the historic vessel form, re-contextualising it through their individual
ceramics practice. The exhibition explores a contemporary response to
the Moon Jar and its symbolic position in Britain today.

The writing is on the wall for the pleasure loving king of Babylon who decides to entertain his guests with wine served from the golden vessels looted from the Temple of Jerusalem. Big mistake.

Here are all the Baroque devices which make us feel the horror of the doomed Belshazzar and his guests. Partly comical, partly a work of genius, the painting is a tribute to the artist’s psychological astuteness and technical sleight of hand.

Contemporary Ceramics Centre, 14th February – 9th March 2013

This year, 2013, will be Akiko’s 10th anniversary of her graduation from her ceramic course at Central St. Martins.

“I make, so people describe, asymmetrical, imperfect and organic forms in ceramic ware for domestic use. These words become a clichéd description of some types of oriental ceramic ware, and mine. Yet, it does not explain why beauty manifests itself in such controversial forms. Imperfection itself is not synonymous with beauty. Beauty in imperfection only applies when it shows flexibility and balance between objects and their environment. My practice over the past 10 years has been a journey to create this balance in everyday objects.” Akiko Hirai
