Monday Art Talk 18 March: Rembrandt: Belshazzar’s Feast

The writing is on the wall for the pleasure loving king of Babylon who decides to entertain his guests with wine served from the golden vessels looted from the Temple of Jerusalem. Big mistake.

Here are all the Baroque devices which make us feel the horror of the doomed Belshazzar and his guests. Partly comical, partly a work of genius, the painting is a tribute to the artist’s psychological astuteness and technical sleight of hand.

Studio F9 / 7 for 7.30 / £10 including a glass of wine.
