An Introduction to Touching Paintings

Andrew McDonald
14.00, free, in the Chocolate Factory N16 courtyard
“My latest performance piece is an exploration of the audience’s
relationship and mine, both physically and psychologically, to the
painted image on the wall. The traditional oil on canvas image is sacred
and untouchable and yet our innate desire is to touch this object. This
performance involves using paintings to wrap my body in and in doing so
crossing a line, bringing the painter and the painting into intimate
contact. The audience will also be involved.”

Edward Lear’s Travels in Nonsense and Europe
Peter Swaab
16.00, free, Studio F4, Chocolate Factory N16.
Peter Swaab explores how Edward Lear’s travel journals and nonsense
poetry were two sides of the same coin, imagining faraway worlds and
escapes to a new self.
Peter Swaab is the editor of the Selected Nonsense and Travel Writings
of Edward Lear and of the first ever editions of poetry and prose by
Sara Coleridge.  He wrote the BFI Film Classic book on the great
screwball comedy Bringing Up Baby and curated a season of screwballs at
the NFT in January 2013. He is a professor in the English Department of
University College London.
